Right to Work — frequently asked questions
All UK employers must verify the right to work of every employee before they begin employment. This applies whether the employee is British, Irish, EU, or from anywhere else in the world. Failure to do so can result in civil penalties of up to £60,000 per illegal worker.
You can complete your check on most modern smartphones, but your device does need to meet a few minimum requirements so the camera and connection work properly.
If you’re using an Android phone, you’ll need Chrome 132 or later, or Firefox 132 or later.
If you’re using an iPhone or iPad, you’ll need Safari 15.3 or later, or Chrome 120 or later.
Your camera needs to record video in Full HD (1920 × 1080).
Most phones bought in the last few years will meet these comfortably. To get the best result, make sure your browser is up to date before you start, use a strong Wi-Fi or 4G/5G connection, and find a well-lit spot so your camera can capture a clear image.
If you’re not sure whether your device is suitable, or you run into any problems during your check, get in touch and we’ll be happy to help.
